Privacy Policy
Welcome to Illuminate. Your privacy is of paramount importance to us. This Privacy Policy outlines how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our Chrome extension and related services.
1. Information We Collect
Illuminate is designed with a "privacy-first" philosophy. We aim to minimize the collection of personal data:
- Images for Processing: When you use our OCR or translation features, the selected image or screen area is sent to secure cloud AI providers for processing. Images are discarded immediately after processing and are never used for model training or stored permanently.
- Your image content is not used to train, improve, or develop any AI models.
- Usage Data: We log usage statistics (API calls, request timestamps, and feature usage) to enforce subscription limits and improve our service. This data is associated with your license key.
- Local Extension Data: Your license key and preferences (processing mode, OCR settings, and other options) are stored locally in your browser via Chrome Storage. This data is not transmitted to our servers and remains on your device.
- Account Information: If you subscribe to a Pro plan, we collect your email address and license key through Polar, our subscription management platform. Payment processing is handled securely by Stripe through Polar. We do not store your full credit card details.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- To provide and maintain the OCR and translation services.
- To verify subscription status and enforce usage limits.
- To improve and optimize the performance of our extension.
- To communicate with you regarding your account or support requests.
3. Third-Party Services
To provide high-quality translations and OCR, we use the following third-party providers:
- Qwen/DashScope (Alibaba): Our primary cloud AI provider for OCR and translation processing. When you use cloud processing, images are transmitted to Alibaba Cloud for analysis. See their Privacy Policy for information about how they handle your data.
- Polar.sh: For subscription management and license key verification. Polar processes your email and payment information per their Privacy Policy.
- Cloudflare: Our infrastructure provider for the Cloudflare Workers backend. See their Privacy Policy.
Consent for Cloud Processing: Cloud-based OCR and translation requires your explicit opt-in. You can enable or disable cloud processing at any time in the extension settings. When cloud processing is disabled, all OCR operations use local processing only (Tesseract.js) which occurs entirely in your browser.
These providers have their own privacy policies and are committed to data security. We only share the minimum necessary data (e.g., the image content) for them to perform their functions.
4. Data Security
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data. All communication between the extension and our backend is encrypted using HTTPS. As mentioned, images are never saved to persistent storage.
5. Your Rights
